Recommendations for Lake Whitney

Overview

Lake Whitney is a roughly 23,220-acre reservoir on the Brazos River in Hill, Bosque, and Johnson counties, about halfway between Dallas–Fort Worth and Waco. Whitney Dam was completed in the 1950s and is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District for flood risk management, hydroelectric power, water supply, and recreation.

At conservation pool the lake has about 190 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 24 feet, and a maximum depth of about 108 feet. Limestone bluffs, open-water basins, creek arms, and Cross Timbers shoreline create a classic Central Texas Corps reservoir with both scenic cliffs and productive flats.

Whitney is popular for striped bass, white bass, largemouth bass, and catfish, as well as camping and boating, with fisheries managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Corps parks, a state park, marinas, and public ramps draw visitors from across North and Central Texas.

Water levels are managed by the Corps around a conservation pool of 533 feet above mean sea level (NGVD29), with flood storage to 571 feet. Upstream on the Brazos, Possum Kingdom Lake is a major Brazos River Authority reservoir, so Whitney elevations respond to basin rainfall, releases, and flood operations. Monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, fishing, and dock access.

Current Conditions

Lake Whitney is currently 0.76 feet below full pool and has fallen slightly over the past week.
