Recommendations for Proctor Lake

Overview

Proctor Lake is a roughly 4,600-acre reservoir on the Leon and Sabana rivers in Comanche County, in north-central Texas west of Fort Worth. Proctor Dam was completed in the 1960s and is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District for flood risk management, water supply, and recreation in the Brazos / Leon River basin.

At conservation pool the lake has about 38 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 12 feet, and a maximum depth of about 34 feet. Rolling plains shoreline, creek arms, and relatively shallow flats create a compact Corps lake with both open water and protected coves.

Proctor is popular for camping, boating, and fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and white bass, with fisheries managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Corps parks, campgrounds, and boat ramps provide the main public access around the reservoir.

Water levels are managed by the Corps around a conservation pool of 1,162 feet above mean sea level (NGVD29), with flood storage to about 1,197 feet. Downstream on the Leon River, Belton Lake is the next major Corps project, so Proctor elevations respond to rainfall and flood operations. Monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, fishing, and shoreline access.

Current Conditions

Proctor Lake is currently 3.54 feet below full pool and has fallen slightly over the past week.
