Recommendations for Nolichucky Reservoir

Overview

Nolichucky Reservoir, also called Davy Crockett Lake, is a small reservoir of about 750 acres on the Nolichucky River in East Tennessee near Greeneville. Nolichucky Dam was completed in 1913 as a hydropower project and later acquired by the Tennessee Valley Authority; due to siltation, power generation ceased in 1972 and the reservoir was converted into a wildlife management area.

Stretching about six miles upstream from the dam, the shallow, silted reservoir is bordered by wildlife habitat and the nearby Cherokee National Forest. Its quiet, undeveloped character contrasts with the large storage lakes elsewhere in the TVA system.

The reservoir and especially the Nolichucky River below the dam are popular for smallmouth bass fishing, with fisheries managed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Boat access and camping are available at nearby Kinser Park, and a ramp below the dam serves river anglers.

Water levels on Nolichucky Reservoir are managed by TVA around a pool near 1,370 feet above mean sea level. Because the project no longer generates power and functions primarily as a wildlife area, levels are relatively stable, but monitoring current conditions is still helpful for boating and fishing.
