Kentucky Lake is a large reservoir on the Tennessee River along the Kentucky-Tennessee border, created by Kentucky Dam in the early 1940s. At summer pool it covers roughly 160,000 acres, making it one of the largest reservoirs in the eastern United States. Its length and position within the Tennessee River system give it a central role in regional navigation, flood management, and power generation.
The shoreline follows a long, river-valley layout with broad main-lake sections, winding creek arms, and extensive flats. Submerged structure, points, ledges, and defined river and creek channels shape much of the basin. Seasonal water-level changes between summer and winter pool expose additional shoreline and alter access to shallow cover, adding variety across the reservoir.
Kentucky Lake is widely known for its strong crappie and largemouth bass fisheries, with productive populations of catfish and other sport species as well. The lake is operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority for hydropower, navigation, and flood control while supporting major boating, fishing, and recreation across western Kentucky and Tennessee.
