Overview
Greers Ferry Lake is a roughly 31,500-acre reservoir on the Little Red River in the Ozark foothills of north-central Arkansas, near Heber Springs in Cleburne and Van Buren counties. It was created when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed Greers Ferry Dam in 1962 (powerhouse 1964), one of five multipurpose White River Basin projects. The lake is operated for flood risk management, hydroelectric power, and recreation, and its cold-water releases support a world-class trout fishery on the Little Red River below the dam.
At conservation pool Greers Ferry has about 272 miles of shoreline and averages near 70 feet deep, with a maximum depth of about 200 feet. Two large lake basins connected by The Narrows, rocky points, islands, and clear deep water give the reservoir a distinctive Ozark layout that is popular with both powerboaters and anglers.
The lake is a major regional recreation destination, with numerous Corps parks, campgrounds, marinas, and boat ramps around the shoreline. It is known for walleye, hybrid striped bass, largemouth and spotted bass, crappie, and catfish, with fisheries managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, while the Little Red River tailwater is famous for trophy trout.
Water levels on Greers Ferry Lake are managed by the Corps of Engineers around a conservation pool of 462.04 feet NGVD29, with a flood-control pool extending to 487 feet. Elevations respond to Little Red River inflows, hydropower generation, and flood storage needs, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, fishing, and shoreline access throughout the year.
