At-a-glance
Lake Greenwood is a reservoir located in western South Carolina on the Saluda River, within the upper Congaree River system. Created in the 1940s, the lake spans approximately 11,400 acres and serves as an important regional water resource. Its elongated shape and riverine character distinguish it from many broader, open-basin reservoirs in the state.
The shoreline is long and varied, featuring winding creek arms, shallow flats, wooded banks, and gently sloping shorelines. Much of the lake retains a strong river-lake transition, with submerged channels, points, and backwater areas shaping the underwater structure. This combination of narrow reaches and wider mid-lake sections supports diverse aquatic habitats throughout the reservoir.
Lake Greenwood supports a productive warmwater fishery with well-established populations of largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, catfish, and bream. The lake is owned and managed by Greenwood County, which oversees water-level management, shoreline use, and recreational access while supporting hydropower operations and long-term resource stewardship.
