Lake Hartwell is a large reservoir located along the South Carolina–Georgia border on the Savannah River, with major inflows from the Tugaloo and Seneca rivers. Completed in the early 1960s, the lake spans approximately 56,000 acres and features a vast, irregular shoreline. Its size and position within the upper Savannah River basin make it a significant water resource for the region.
The shoreline is highly varied, consisting of long creek arms, gently sloping banks, wooded coves, and expansive open-water areas. Submerged timber, points, and defined river and creek channels contribute to a structurally diverse basin. This combination of broad main-lake sections and protected tributaries supports a wide range of aquatic habitats across the reservoir.
Lake Hartwell is widely recognized for its diverse and productive fishery, supporting established populations of largemouth bass, spotted bass, hybrid striped bass, crappie, and catfish. The lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, serving multiple purposes including flood control, hydropower generation, and water supply while remaining a major recreational resource for the southeastern United States.
Lake Hartwell is at 653.18 feet msl which is 6.82 feet Below full pool of 660 feet.
The lake level is up over the last 7 days.
