Clarks Hill Lake (also known as Lake Thurmond) is a large reservoir located along the Georgia–South Carolina border on the Savannah River. Spanning approximately 71,000 acres, it is one of the largest inland lakes in the Southeast. Its size and interstate footprint make it a significant component of the regional watershed and water management system.
Clarks Hill Lake is widely recognized for its productive and balanced fishery, supporting healthy populations of largemouth bass, spotted bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish. The lake’s expansive size and structural diversity provide a range of habitats, from broad open-water areas to protected creek arms and river-channel environments.
The lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, serving multiple purposes including flood control, hydropower generation, and water supply. In addition to its operational role, Clarks Hill remains a major public recreational resource, with extensive shoreline access, boat ramps, and marinas supporting consistent use throughout the year.
